Avanti Mental Maths
The author of Avanti Mental Maths, Ellita De Nardi, runs workshops for teachers that cover the book and assist teachers to plan, implement and assess Number and Working Mathematically outcomes.
The
traditional practice of daily mental maths ‘testing’ does not help students make
progress in the achievement of the Number and Working Mathematically outcomes.
An alternative approach is to provide students with constructive learning tasks
that will assist students of all abilities to understand numbers, understand
operations and calculate efficiently. This is done by focussing on four types of
practical and easy to implement tasks:
• Open ended tasks
• Practice games
• Explicit teaching of mental calculating strategies
• Speed and accuracy checks
Teachers of Years 1-8 are invited to attend workshops to find out how to make
this work in their classrooms.
