OTRNet Newsletter 20

Hi and welcome to our January 2002 Newsletter.

After the summer holiday its time to be thinking again about how and what we are going to teach and what resources we need.

The best thing I have seen in maths education since last year is a book I purchased from AAMT titled "Realizing a Vision of Tomorrow's Mathematics Classroom".  More on this later in the newsletter.

Welcome to our new readers including those of you who are involved in Home Based Learning.  It was great to meet you and hear about your needs at the Expo.

In this newsletter there is information on:

1.    Progress on the Integrated Maths Modules

2.    Renewing Subscriptions to our Online Service

3.    A Vision for Maths Education

1.    Progress on the Integrated Maths Modules

Three modules are currently being finalised and should be out early in 2002.  These are C02: Number, D02: Linear Functions 1 and D04: 2D Shapes 2.  The completion of these will mean that stages B, C and D modules are now all available.

Our first stage E module is also complete and will be trialled early this year.  The plan is to progressively trial and publish the stage E, F and G modules during this year.  All of these should be available for use by year 9's in 2003.

Eleven integrated maths modules are now printed and samples from all these modules are available from our website at the link below:

2.    Renewing Subscriptions to our Online Service

Schools subscribed to any of the four categories of our subscription service are reminded that to continue your access into 2002 you will need to renew your subscription.  Renewals are $10 per category and can be made via a fax or email citing an order number or using our online ordering where you save 10% on all OTRNet products.  Specific reminders will come to you in email form shortly and those not renewed will have their access removed after Friday February 15th.  Take a few minutes to renew now!

If you were not previously subscribed then follow the link below to find out more about what we offer.  You can get students working mathematically on quality tasks modelled to fit your desired outcomes.

3.    A Vision for Maths Education

Continuing our section on progress in education, and maths education in particular, I would recommend to all of you a publication titled " Realizing a Vision of Tomorrow's Mathematics Classroom - A Handbook on Rich Learning Tasks" (G. Flewelling with W. Higginson, Queen's University, Ontario, Can.).  This handbook looks at the relationship between Rich Tasks, Tomorrow's Student and Tomorrow's Teacher.  It provides a deep insight into where we need to be moving maths education and encourages teachers to develop tasks for students that are more meaningful and that will result in improved learning.
