Downloading Files

Background

OTRNet Subscription service makes files available to its subscribers in a form that suits their purpose and their computer system.

For Investigations the formats available are:

Portable Document Format (pdf )

Microsoft Word Files (Word 97/2000/2002 Version)

Corel Word Perfect Files (WP 6/7/8/9/10/11 Version)

For Internet Assignments the format is:

HTML Files

Unfortunately, the form that a file finally takes on the subscribers computer is dependent on the software and settings of their computer and is therefore out of our control. Files in Portable Document Format avoid this problem but are not editable without the appropriate software. This is why users should use this page to test downloads until they find a system that suits their purpose.

Formats

Portable Document Format files have the extension: (.pdf). These files can not be reformatted without the appropriate software although you can cut and paste from them. The advantage of using this system is that the format of the document is fixed and will look identical to the original copy. If you do not wish to edit files after downloading this is the simplest format to choose. To read and print these files you will need a program like Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded free from the Web. You can download Acrobat Reader here.

Microsoft Word files found here are constructed in Word 97 and have the extension: (.doc). This is the word processor most commonly used on systems. Once downloaded, these files can be edited by the user to suit their needs. These files can also be opened in Word 2000 and 2002.

Corel WordPerfect files found here are constructed in WordPerfect 8, 9, 10 and 11 and have the extension: (.wpd). This is another common word processor. Once downloaded, these files can be edited by the user to suit their needs.

Microsoft Excel files found here are constructed in Excel 97 and have the extension (.xls).  These spreadsheets can be downloaded and saved for later use.  They may be edited at a later date although this may require turning off the protection.

HTML files are written in Hyper Text Markup Language which is the standard language for web pages and have the extension (.html). These files can be viewed by any browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla or Opera. The files can be downloaded and saved for later viewing or editing.

Special Notes on Image Files

The images contained in OTRNet's files will generally display without problem on users computers. However, some images will not be editable unless the software is available on the users computer. For example, most mathematical diagrams contained in our files are drawn with FXDraw, a product from Efofex Software , and although they will display and print they will not be editable unless you have FXDraw installed.

Storing Your Files

No matter what process you use to download files you will need to store them somewhere on your computer, even if only temporarily. We would suggest you create a new folder before you commence downloading and save files there.

Downloading Files

The images below are links to "trial files" for you to test downloading.

Word 97 WordPerfect  PDF Excel HTML

Simply clicking on these links may start a dialogue that enables you to download and save the files in a usable form. However, it may open the file in your browser, and this is often not of much use.

A better method is probably to use the save link or save target commands as detailed below:

If Internet Explorer is your browser:

On a PC - right click on the link and from the menu select "Save Target As".

On a Mac - click on the link and select "Download Link To Disk".

If Netscape Navigator is your browser:

On a PC - right click on the link and from the menu select "Save Link As".

On a Mac - click on the link and select "Save This Link As".

We suggest you trial this procedure making notes if necessary until you find a method that works for you.
